My Ship Came In

06/2006

Sex and the City.

Of the many boats I’ve missed, this one is probably the biggest. When the show was at the top of popular culture, I hadn’t watched an episode. When my column was compared to Carrie Bradshaw’s column, I knew only enough to say thank you.

By the time I watched my first episode, Sex and the City had been over for at least two years. Curious and flattered by the comparisons between my stuff and their stuff, I watched an episode (with my love). Then five more (with my love). Followed by a season and another season and another season after that (I lost him). I was doing a comparison study and here are the results:

Likenesses between me and those four sexy girls in Manhattan:

MIRANDA: Most of her boyfriends are like my boyfriends – nice. In the last ten years I’ve dated the best guys in the world with the exception of two men, neither of whom I would acknowledge if stuck in a phone booth with either one.

SAMANTHA: Like Samantha, I enjoy what I enjoy without shame.

CHARLOTTE: Nerdy, easily embarrassed, traditional – that’s me.

CARRIE: God bless her, she doesn’t cook, she writes. Therefore, we are one. And, Mr. Big? We’ll see.

So there you have it. Yeah, you could say I’m exactly like Sex and the City – without the sex, the city, the Emmys, and a whole lotta success and great shoes. But thanks. I’m lovin’ it.
